What does legal translation mean?
The term legal translation most often refers to accurate and reliable translation services for the legal sector. However, in reality, legal translations are required in every area of business, not just in law-specific firms and organisations. Every business and every individual has to deal with legal documents, from employee contracts to terms & conditions to marriage certificates.
This is why it’s important that linguists working on legal-specific translations are qualified not only in legal translations, but in specific areas of legal translations such as employment law or court law. This helps to avoid mistranslations or any errors that could lead to serious consequences, such as lawsuits or contractual obligations costing thousands.
When legal translation goes wrong
Mistranslations in a legal context have led to severe consequences throughout history on several occasions, one of which was the 1840 Treaty of Waitangi between the British and the Maori in New Zealand. The Treaty was signed by both sides, but due to an error in translation, they signed two different documents.
In the English version, the Maori were to “cede to Her Majesty the Queen of England absolutely and without reservation all the rights and powers of sovereignty.” In the Maori version, however, translated by a British missionary, they were not to give up sovereignty, but governance.
The issues around the meaning of this treaty still cause confusions to this day.
It is easy to see that there is no room for ambiguity in the translation of legal documents, as the mistranslation of one single word can lead to unforeseeable consequences.
Our Legal Translation Services
Our Legal Translation Services are delivered by a carefully selected network of legal translators, coming from a variety of backgrounds. To ensure that we deliver premium Legal Translation Services, all of our linguists have to meet certain criteria.
How we deliver premium results fast
Your project will be assigned to a project manager who will find the most suitable linguist specializing in just the area you need. This will ensure that the document translated is 100% accurate using the correct terminology, as well as linguistically and contextually fluid.
Although our legal translators have an in-depth knowledge in their specialized area, research is an essential part of a translation job. First, we make sure we listen to your requirements to understand what exactly you need. Then, our linguists conduct a thorough research and analysis to gain a wider understanding of the context of your project.
Our biggest assets are our dedicated legal translators and their expertise, but at Keep Translations we also keep up with the latest technology. We use databases that store the translations of technical terms thus allowing our translators to retrieve these quickly.
Once your document is translated, it will be revised by a second specialized legal translator, then it is run through quality assurance using semi-automated tools to scan for consistency, terminology, spelling and grammar errors. It makes the process faster without compromising on quality and enables us to provide you with an efficient service.
Certified legal translation services
Legal documents are often for official use which requires a certified translation. We have a wide range of certified translators who are fully accredited and legally recognised. When you require a certified translation, we will issue you with a translation that states:
